Diabetics must have their eyes examined by a medical eye doctor much more often than those without diabetes. Pannu Laser & Vision Institute recommends a minimum of at least one complete eye exam a year in one of our offices.
For diabetic patients, once symptoms appear it is often too late to treat because by then the damage is often permanent. Diabetics must have their eyes examined at least once a year to monitor eye health and help catch any early signs or symptoms of eye diseases as early as possible.
Why Are Diabetics More At Risk?
Diabetes is a condition that damages blood vessels. Damaged blood vessels do not circulate blood properly, preventing oxygen and other nutrients from reaching the entire body effectively. Over time, parts of the body may become damaged from the lack of oxygen and/or nutrients. As a result, diabetics have a higher risk of developing poor eye health (among other conditions). Therefore, it is imperative that patients with diabetes make regular visits to a medical eye doctor.
What Types of Eye Issues Are Diabetics at Risk for?
Patients with diabetes have a higher risk of developing diseases that cause a complete or partial loss of vision. The most common eye health issues in diabetic patients include, but not limited to:
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Cornea Damage
- Macular Degeneration
- Loss Of Blood To The Eye Or Nerves
- And More
